At the American International School of Budapest, we believe that education is most impactful when it transcends the walls of the classroom and connects our students with the world. Recently, our Grade 4B students experienced a truly remarkable moment of global connection that bridged Canadian history, personal perseverance, and the power of a shared dream.
As an international community, we often celebrate the diverse backgrounds of our faculty. Mr. Kevin Fayarchuk, Grade 4B Homeroom Teacher, brought a piece of his Canadian heritage to AISB, sharing a story that has inspired millions for over four decades: the legacy of Terry Fox.
A Marathon of Hope and Heart
Terry Fox is an iconic figure who attempted the impossible. After losing a leg to cancer in the early 1980s, Terry embarked on his Marathon of Hope, running 42 kilometers every single day for 143 days to raise funds for cancer research. His message was simple yet profound: dreams are possible if you remain determined and never give up.
While Terry passed away before his 23rd birthday, his mission endured. To date, the Terry Fox Foundation has raised over $1 billion CAD for cancer research.
"Sharing the story and video of Terry’s life, my students became immediately enthralled with this hero," reflects Mr. Fayarchuk. "I have been involved with the Terry Fox Run for 25 years across Taipei, Zurich, and Budapest, but I have never seen students as excited and engaged as they were during this unit."

A Global Connection
The excitement reached a new peak when a unique opportunity arose. Through a long-time professional connection with the Terry Fox Foundation, Mr. Fayarchuk was able to organize a private video call for his students with Fred Fox, Terry’s older brother.
The preparation for the call was a lesson in itself. Students spent days crafting thoughtful, inquisitive questions that delved into Terry’s character, his challenges, and the legacy he left behind.
"On the morning of the video call, the classroom was filled with a mix of nervous energy and pure joy," Mr. Fayarchuk shares. "Once we connected with Fred, it became clear how accommodating and genuinely interested he was to hear from our students at AISB. I was immensely proud of how well the students presented themselves and the depth of their inquiries."

Lessons for the Future
The conversation with Fred Fox was more than just a history lesson; it was a masterclass in determination, perseverance, and purpose. It provided our Grade 4 students with a living link to a story of resilience that continues to change the world.
When the call concluded, there was a palpable sense that something special had occurred. It is these moments of authentic engagement—where biography, history, and empathy intersect—that define the AISB experience. We are committed to fostering a learning environment where students do not just read about heroes; they speak with the people who keep those legacies alive.
As we look toward the future, we carry Terry’s message with us: no dream is too big if you have the courage to start.
