High School EAL Teacher


 Reports To: High School Principal

Position Overview

AISB seeks a dynamic and experienced EAL Teacher to support multilingual learners in Grades 9–10 and to provide consultative and instructional support for students in Grades 11–12.  The successful candidate will collaborate closely with content-area teachers and the student support team to ensure that English language learners can access, engage with, and achieve success in AISB’s rigorous academic programs.

  • Promotes inquiry-based learning within a standard-informed, concept-based curriculum;
  • Understands typical developmental characteristics of adolescents.

Qualifications & Experience

  • A valid teaching certification (or equivalent) in teaching English Language Learners;
  • A minimum three years’ experience in supporting English Language Learners, preferably in an international or bilingual context;
  • Experience in a co-planning / co-teaching / co-assessing instructional model
  • Recent experience and a passion for working with high school students;
  • Technology literate in Web and Google Applications to support collaboration with students and colleagues while maintaining appropriate confidentiality settings.

Preferred Skills and Experience

  • Master''s Degree in Education with a specialization in EAL;
  • Certification or training in instructional coaching;
  • Experience teaching and assessing with the WIDA Framework;
  • Experience with the Duolingo English Test (DET) or similar;
  • Understands implications of the tenets of the Science of Learning / Universal Design for Learning and designs with these tenets in mind.

EAL-Specific Skills and Responsibilities

Instruction and Support

  • Designs and delivers engaging EAL lessons to students in Grades 9 and 10 focused on academic English proficiency, literacy development, and content-based language learning;
  • Plans, teaches, and/or provides in-class support with grade-level teachers to support EAL students’ participation in mainstream classes;
  • Provides targeted support to Grades 11 and 12 EAL students enrolled in the IB Diploma, AISB Diploma, and/or Global Impact Diploma programs;
  • Modifies curriculum delivery and assessment as needed,  based on student proficiency levels, learning styles, and individual goals;
  • Provides timely, constructive feedback that supports student growth and reflection;
  • Maintains accurate records for students receiving EAL services and communicates progress using digital (Google, Veracross) and other tools;
  • Maintains updated units on Atlas and other curriculum storage platforms.

Collaboration and Consultation

  • Evaluates English language proficiency levels of new applicants and enrolled students providing recommendations to the admissions team;
  • Contributes to the identification, placement, and monitoring of enrolled and applicant EAL students using school-wide assessment systems;
  • Advises teachers on language acquisition strategies and best practices for supporting multilingual learners across disciplines;
  • Supports teachers to make appropriate accommodations for students who are developing English language proficiency;
  • Contributes to the ongoing development of AISB’s EAL program and language support models;
  • Attends regular Student Support Team meetings to determine future actions and support;
  • Communicates regularly with administration, parents, and teachers about student support strategies, accommodations, and progress;
  • Collaborates with counselors to support students’ academic, social, and emotional well-being, maintaining an appropriate level of confidentiality.

Additional Professional Responsibilities

  • Implements school policies and practices aligned with AISB’s Mission, Vision, and Values;
  • Establishes clear behavioral expectations in line with school expectations.
  • Serves as an advisor, supporting a small group of students through pastoral care.
  • Proactively participates in and/or leads extracurricular activities, including overnight Core Expeditions in grades 6-12
  • Performs additional duties effectively (during and outside the regular school day) as required by the school
